The Comeback of a Lost Ozark Giant

In light of Arbor Day, we’re spotlighting a tree once central to the Ozark landscape, but now on the brink of disappearing: the Ozark Chinquapin.

  • A Vanished Native: Sometimes called the Ozark Chestnut, the Chinquapin was once a key source of food for wildlife, durable timber, and even medicinal uses. A devastating blight in the mid-1900s nearly wiped them out entirely, and today, many people have never even heard of it.

  • Reviving The Roots: The Ozark Chinquapin Foundation is leading the charge to bring this tree back to life. By identifying blight-resistant trees, planting test sites, and rallying support from landowners and outdoorsmen, they’re restoring an important piece of the Ozarks’ natural heritage one seedling at a time.

Find out how this Ozark giant is making a comeback in an episode of The Ozark Podcast HERE.

Pet Of The Week

Our pet of the week is Officer Ben! This 4-year-old, 67-lb ball of goofiness earned the title Officer after he snuck out of his room at the Best Friends Pet Resource Center one night. The security camera footage showed him methodically exploring every part of the building just like a security officer on his rounds. Now he even has his own security badge.

He’s never met a stranger, loves playing with kids, loves puppies, and enjoys playing with other dogs. Officer Ben was adopted, but his adopter had to move overseas, so he’s back patrolling the pet resource center until he is adopted again—maybe by you?
