Whether you’re looking for a four-year university, a community college, technical training, culinary education or a medical degree, Northwest Arkansas has a growing number of higher-education options.

Here’s a look at the colleges, universities and specialized higher-education programs in the region.

📍 Fayetteville

The University of Arkansas is NWA’s flagship public university and the state’s largest four-year institution. Founded in 1871, the U of A offers undergraduate, graduate and professional programs across 10 colleges and schools, including business, engineering, agriculture, education, law and the arts.

📍 Siloam Springs

John Brown University is a private university founded in 1919. JBU offers more than 50 undergraduate majors along with graduate programs in areas including business, counseling, education and cybersecurity. The university has more than 2,500 students across its traditional, graduate, online and concurrent programs.

Ecclesia is a private college built around its “Work-Learning” model, combining classroom education with practical work experience. The college offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s programs in areas including business, leadership, psychology, and sport management.

📍 Bentonville & Springdale

NWACC is the region’s community college and offers more than 75 degrees and certificates. Programs range from business and computer information systems to health professions, science, trades and culinary education.

NWACC has its main campus in Bentonville and a Washington County location in Springdale. The college also operates Brightwater: A Center for the Study of Food in Bentonville.

Northwest Technical Institute focuses on hands-on career and technical education designed to prepare students for in-demand jobs. Programs cover fields such as automotive technology, welding, health sciences, information technology, construction and other skilled trades.

This is a heating and air trade school that takes a hands-on approach to training. Unlike traditional trade schools, 66% of the program is spent gaining hands-on experience and actually repairing equipment, so students are work-ready from Day One. Rather than focusing solely on theory, the program prepares students to hit the ground running in the HVAC industry with real-world skills, troubleshooting techniques, and the confidence to do the job right.

BIT is a non-profit organization that offers short-term, hands-on industrial maintenance training. The team recently added robotics and additional safety training, and continues to offer soft skills/personal development classes and computer courses to meet training needs.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' Northwest Regional Campus is UAMS' largest regional campus. Established in 2007, it offers health-profession education including a three-year M.D. program, accelerated nursing, physical therapy and occupational therapy programs.

The Alice L. Walton School of Medicine is a new four-year medical school focused on whole-health principles and training future physicians. The school welcomed its second class of 48 students in July 2026.

The Bentonville medical school is designed to combine traditional medical education with areas such as whole health, the arts and humanities.

Brightwater is NWACC's culinary and food-education center located at 8th Street Market. It goes beyond traditional culinary training, offering programs in culinary arts, artisanal food, baking and pastry, artisanal butchery and beverage management.

The school also offers classes focused on topics such as culinary nutrition, food waste, food security, farming and fermentation.

Good to know: Brightwater isn't a separate college. It's an academic division of NWACC.

📍 Bentonville

A new private, STEM-focused university backed by members of the Walton family is being developed on the site of the former Walmart Home Office in Bentonville.

The university is being designed around fields connected to the region's future workforce, including artificial intelligence, computing, automation, logistics and biotechnology. The planned campus will include an academic building, student housing and a makerspace.

The university intends to welcome its first class in 2029, with tuition expected to be fully covered during its initial years of operation.
