Sharks In The Ozarks: Arkansas-Found Fossil Making Waves

The fossil of a strange shark-like creature found in Arkansas is making waves in the scientific community, challenging established ideas about ancient marine life.

  • Cosmoselachus Mehlingi: Royal and Gene Mapes, a married couple who served as esteemed scientists and professors at Ohio University, found the fossil in Arkansas in the 1970s, but it has only recently been studied in depth. With traits reminiscent of sharks and ratfish, the fossil’s existence hints at a time of unparalleled morphological experimentation among cartilaginous fishes.

  • This Place Rocks: The Ozarks region, particularly the Fayetteville Shale Formation, holds a significant repository of fossilized remains, offering valuable insights into ancient marine life. Maybe millions of years from now, they’ll be digging up fossils of mountain bikers in the Ozarks.
