Architecture Students Design Prototype To Address Housing Crisis

Students and faculty from the Fay Jones School of Architecture have constructed an innovative housing prototype strategically designed to make homeownership a reality for workers earning $16 to $18 an hour.

  • Building Wealth: The innovative Workforce 16 prototype emerged when Professor John Folan assigned students to design affordable homes, specifically for workers making $16 to $18 an hour.

  • Tuned-Up Timber: The prototype utilizes wave-layered timber joined together by grooves and metal rods instead of nails, accelerating assembly and preserving the wood for future reuse. Each unit is 500 sq. ft., surrounded by bays that can expand the home by an additional 700 sq. ft. as a family grows.

The prototype will be displayed outside Vol Walker Hall for one year for job skill training workshops and first-time homebuyer engagement. Learn more HERE.
