Long Lost Genes Found in Arkansas Honeybee Study

A recent study of statewide samples from Arkansas beekeepers revealed gene traces of the European dark honeybees, or “German Honeybees” — previously thought to have gone extinct in the United States.

  • See you, Honey: German Honeybees were the first honeybees introduced to the Western Hemisphere in 1622. Dark bees were the most commonly managed bee until the 19th century when Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth, the “father of American beekeeping,” led the widespread adoption of Italian bees, which he believed to be gentler.

  • In the Wild: Langstroth believed the German bees would eventually die off. They have across much of the United States, but evidence of their survival in Arkansas could provide valuable insight into the resiliency of honeybees and how to protect domestic bees from parasitic mites and other threats.
