Who Pays To Keep The Natural State Natural?
Arkansas’s outdoor recreation economy brings in $5B annually and is on track to bring in $7B by 2032. That growth raises the question: Can the state grow its outdoor economy without damaging the land it depends on?
Our Conservation Math Problem: Hunters and anglers have historically carried the weight of conservation by paying license fees and excise taxes, but their numbers are shrinking while hikers, paddlers, and climbers become the fastest-growing groups on public land. So who will foot the bill moving forward?
Share The Load: The recent Amendment 75 introduced a 1/8-cent sales tax paid by everyone, not just sportsmen, split across state parks, Game & Fish, and conservation. And as of July 1, non-hunters and anglers now need a $10.50 WMA/Lake Conservation Permit to use public land and lakes.
The Office of Outdoor Recreation's Katherine Andrews and Becky Flynn joined The Ozark Podcast to unpack the recreation boom’s impact on conservation. Listen in HERE.
