On This Day
Fayetteville Formed 191 Years Ago Today
191 years ago today, on Thursday, Feb 27, 1835, President Andrew Jackson issued a patent for 160 acres to form the original settlement of Fayetteville.
A City Takes Shape: Within the boundaries of today’s College Avenue, Gregg Avenue, Dickson Street, and South Street, the land laid the foundation for the city. All lots, except the Square, were auctioned between 1835 and 1837, generating $6,339 across 169 sales, which funded a courthouse and Clerk’s Office.
Building the Basics By 1836, Fayetteville’s first brick building, a schoolhouse on what’s now School Avenue, had opened. A military road also cut through town, connecting St. Louis to Fort Smith, placing Fayetteville on the map.
