Turpentine Creek Welcomes Six Lions Rescued From Canada

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs welcomed six African lions from Ontario, Canada, following a complex cross-border rescue mission involving three sanctuaries and two countries.

  • Hakuna Matata: The lions, littermates Mufasa, Scar, and Nirvana, a rare white lion Thor, and two 13-week-old cubs, were rescued from a closed roadside zoo. The mission required months of international permits, navigating government shutdowns and unexpected cubs' birth, while racing against the Canadian winter.

  • Hear Me Roar: Thor, who had been moved between facilities his entire life due to his unique coloring, now has his first permanent home. All six lions arrived safely earlier this month and are now visible to visitors at the refuge.
