The Winding Road To Justice: Nelson Hackett's Fight for Freedom

City of Fayetteville - "Remembrance" by Joelle Storet
The name Nelson Hackett may not be widely known, but his daring escape from Fayetteville in 1841 set off a legal battle that reshaped international extradition laws and strengthened Canada’s role as a refuge for those fleeing slavery.
A Daring Escape: Hackett, an enslaved man in Fayetteville, made a bold escape to Canada in 1841, believing he had reached freedom. However, his former enslaver pursued him, leading to his arrest and an unprecedented extradition—the only time Canada forcibly returned a self-emancipated person to slavery.
A Name Remembered: His forced return outraged abolitionists and influenced British policy, ensuring no future fugitive would suffer the same fate. Today, his legacy lives on in Fayetteville, where Nelson Hackett Boulevard now honors his fight for freedom.
Discover the full, gripping story of Hackett’s journey and the fight for justice HERE.
